The Olathe Christian School Warrior Men's Basketball have a rich distinct history in the area of sports. The Warriors have won numerous state championships and a few NACA National Championships. The Warriors had their first season in 1987/88. Their record was 5 - 20. The next season saw a newcomer, Jonnie Smith, joining his future brother-in-law, Billy Wilson creating a powerful duo that would lead the Warriors for the next three years. That team’s record was 20 - 5 going from last place in their conference division to first place. That team went on to take 6th place in the national ACE tournament and won their conference tournaments the next two years. During the Wilson-Smith duo era, a new era began. Jonathan Ackridge, a homeschooler, joined the team. The school was very small and the addition of Jonathan was very helpful. During the summer of 1990, a home school mother, Lisa Day, contacted Roy Wilson, the administrator, and asked if her three sons could join the Warriors. Little did anyone know what was getting ready to happen. The Days became a part of the Warriors and home schooled families came by the bunches to join the team. A wonderful relationship developed between home schooled families and Olathe Christian School . During the Day era, the Warriors won several tournaments including the Tonganoxie Invitational and Gardner Invitational. Probably the highlight of the Warrior history was in 1996 when the Warriors won the NACA National Basketball Championship in Dayton , Tennessee . That team also had several other great wins that year. Perhaps the greatest was a tournament championship at the Gardner High School Tourney Invitational. In the championship game, the Warriors prevailed by 76 - 60. That Gardner team went on to win the 4-A State Championship. Other shockers were stunning defeats of powerhouse teams, Washburn Rural and Kansas City Schlagle. The 95/96 Warriors was led by eventual Div. 1 star Jesse Deister (Wright State University) and Nathan Day (Liberty University). Also helping out were Nathan’s brother Jeremy Day (also Liberty University ), Ryan Sullivan (Johnson County Community College), Justin Brady and Steve Skinner. The national championship in Dayton , Tennessee was won in triple overtime over Mt. Zion of North Carolina . That team had four division 1 players. The final score was 100 - 91. The final score still reflects the highest point total of any national championship game at NACA in Division 1. To our knowledge, no other Kansas Christian school team in any sport has achieved the level of quality wins as that 95/96 Olathe Christian School basketball team, coached by Alan Day. Since that time, the Olathe Christian School has really grown and continues to grow. Some of the home schooled families have gone on to have their own teams. Several of the home school teams in the Kansas City area have had their beginning at Olathe Christian School . Olathe Christian School continues to welcome homeschooled families in their program. Our new athletic director, Jonnie Smith, is building a strong commitment to excellence in physical development and devotion to spiritual growth among the athletes. |
