GROUNDBREAKING FOR ATHLETIC FIELDS ORDER OF SERVICE | APRIL 28, 2008 PASTOR BILLY WILSON
In September 1962 John F. Kennedy was making a speech at Rice University in support of the space program, and he said, “But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? . . . We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…” The work we have committed to here is also a great challenge, and we savor the fact that the task God has given us is hard. And to get it done, we will have to work together. I have been in the meetings with bankers who look at how small we are and how big our dreams are and tell us it is impossible. But when I read this Book, I read about a God who has always taken pleasure in using the smallest and poorest to accomplish the most daring and amazing. Well, that’s us—small and poor. So we give ourselves to him to accomplish the amazing.
The book of Ezra tells of a time the Israelites were the small and the poor attempting the daring and amazing.
Ezra 3:10-13 (NLT)

When the
builders completed the foundation of the Lord’s Temple, the priests put
on their robes and took their places to blow their trumpets. And the
Levites, descendants of Asaph, clashed their cymbals to praise the Lord,
just as King David had prescribed. Some were crying for joy, some shouting for joy, but it was evident God was beginning to do something. When word got out what they were trying to do, it didn’t take long before others came to see what was happening. Ezra 4:4-5a (NLT)
As soon as they started building doubters began trying to discourage the effort, saying things like, “It will never happen. Those Jews—who are they trying to fool? Their God has forsaken them.” We’ve come a long way to get to this point, but in a way we have only just begun. There have been people who have been saying for some time, “They are all talk—they will never do it. Who does that small school think they are? Their dreams are too big.” Well I say let them continue to doubt, because our success will not depend on whether we can get people to believe in us, it will depend on whether we can believe in our God.
So we gather here to continue a process and declare our dreams of what will happen on these fields: On these fields boys and girls will become men and women. · On these fields young men and women will be impacted for Jesus. · On these fields students will develop school pride and identity. · On these fields people will become aware of what weakness they must overcome and what strength God has placed within them. · On these fields we will grow spiritually and develop character. · On these fields young people will learn how to work together as a team. · On these fields young we will learn how to turn success into humility and failure into motivation. · On these fields we will learn how to accept criticism alongside praise. · On these fields we will learn character and leadership. · On these fields young men and women will discover what it means to be warriors. · On these fields Jesus Christ will be Lord of all. When these shovels enter the ground, all you gathered here today are to give a shout. Our battle is against the powers of the dark world, so let them know you are coming for them! The plan is to have the field ready for OCS’s first home game on Sept. 5th vs Maranatha Academy so bring a shovel to help them speed up the process!
